The Clarion Call Of Government – “Submit Or Pay”

Seems to be especially in-vogue with the current crowd running things – excessive carbon emitters, auto makers, airline companies, etc, etc…

And now, airport security.

Then there is the grand-daddy of them all – Health Care Reform.  Don’t get me wrong, some of the fines are probably justified, and it’s not like other administrations haven’t also used fines and such as a hammer, it just seems that this gang is trigger happy when it comes to using that weapon.

Surprise Of The Week

We have a government department called “The Exchanges with Historic Whaling and Trading Partners program”.

A bigger surprise, Andrew Sullivan, for some reason, wants to keep it, apparently.  I mean, come on. Yes, some of the rhetoric on spending cuts is silly, and don’t get me wrong, I have little faith in the ability of Republicans to actually make any real effort to balance the budget – I’ll believe it when I see it. But, that said,  I’m having a hard to justifying not cutting this one.

Sensitivity And Stupidity

No, it’s not an unearthed Jane Austin novel –  it refers to an incident that occured on Facebook yesterday.

For those that missed it, the topic focused on something Bob, a straight long-time high school friend, said on his  Facebook page that is supposedly offensive to gays.  I’m one of those gay person types, and I wasn’t offended in the slightest.  I can’t think of a fellow gay type friend who would also have been offended.  His comment was similar to many jokes I’ve overheard gays chuckle about at many a gay bar in my time. Never the less, two of his friends de-friended him over the post. He’s a bit upset about that.

The ironic thing about this incident is, one of the things that often makes being gay such a struggle when you’re young – you greatly fear the loss of friends if they find out your “dark, disgusting” secret. I went way out of my way to make sure none of my friends in college knew. Even my sister, with whom I am very very close, and was my room-mate my first year at CSUF,, had no idea. As a result of hiding what I felt, who I was, I suffered a type of self imposed exile, a great loneliness, that to this day is still hard to describe.

So, Bob has these “gay friendly” friends with whom there is a disagreement. At the slightest provocation, what do these twits do? Why, de-friend him, of course!

Greek Prime Minister – Financial Advisor To Europe?

Well, he is helping French President Nicolas Sarkozy push a Climate Change carbon tax, to be imposed on financial transactions. Now, maybe it’s just me, but, given the financial condition Greece is in (oh, BTW, in case you haven’t been paying close attention, it’s worse than we thought), I’m thinking that listening to this guy on matters of governance and finance might not be, well, lets just say that might not be the smartest move.

Hat Tip: Big Brained Lubos.

PS. To be fair, he only became Prime Minister in 2009, and inherited the mess. But he has been in the Greek Parliament since 1981, and there are no signs that he was anything close to fiscally conservative up to now. It so easy to recommend a tax… It’s other people’s money. And right now, Greece doesn’t have any of its own.

“One wonders when and if the mama grizzly will publicly apologize for her daughter’s use of the term “faggot”. She cannot claim her children are off-limits, when she uses them constantly to advance her own career. And in the wake of recent young gay suicides, Palin’s silence on this demonization of a peer is, while hardly unexpected, troubling. Imagine, for a second, if one of Obama’s daughters had done such a thing. Can you imagine the fuss on the right?

The double standards with respect to Palin and her vicious brood remain.”

Andrew Sullivan, getting his own reward for outlandish hyperbole.

Usually, I’m not pessimistic about the future of our country. I mean, I teach and have seen some very bright and able young adults in my class-room, some who will surely become leaders of the next generation.

But then, I come across this….

Sigh. Is the world ready for a President Situation and VP Palin…. Bristol, that is.

Imminent Release! New (old) Mr Mister Album!!!! UPDATE – It’s Out!!!

Share Button

Yep! After 20 years of being shelved, Richard Page and the other Mr’s have managed to talk the record company into surrendering the last recorded Mr. Mister album called “Pull“, and this 20 year old collection of songs is going to be released this month!

For those who are not in the loop, Pull was to be the fourth release by the band. Before they started recording, around 1990, super-guitarist Steve Ferris left the band. Various studio guitarists, including Buzz Feiten and personal fave Trevor Rabin, were brought in to fill the tremendous gap. Just as the recording phase was being completed, the stupid record company dropped the band, and the three original members decided to call it a day.

A little background. I am a huge Mr Mister fan. Go On, was the last album released. In late 1989, I remember listening to 91X while driving down the I-5 in San Diego, and hearing that Ferris had left the band, and that Feiten was going to be brought in to replace him. That was the last thing I heard until getting the news that the band was no more. I was pretty bummed. Unlike my sister Mary Beth, and Cliffie, my fellow Mr Mister worshiping RareForm guitarist, I would never see them live. Still,Go On was terrific, and I figured that was a good album to be their swan song.

Sometime in 2008, while surfing the web looking for something to blog about…. or more likely just waisting time, by happenstance I came across a web site that mentioned some bootleg recordings of the unreleased Mr Mister material floating around the web. Naturally I hunkered down and through exhaustive searching, i.e. typing in the words “Mr Mister” into the Google, I found that someone had leaked the unreleased album into one of the bit-torrent sites.

I found the recordings. I was overjoyed. There are some real stand-outs in this collection of songs, notably “Quietly, Silently” and “Let The River Run”. They are great songs. Page’s bass playing is steady, and his VOX are silky smooth as ever. Also, more than the previous records, this album belongs to drummer Pat Mastelotto. He absolutely shines! On the downside, Steve Farris extraordinary guitar work is missed. There are bit on songs where you ponder, “man, I wonder what strange / wonderful thing Farris would have pulled there”. Oh well, he’s not there. What can you do. Also, there were a couple of tracks missing, and the tracks that were there were obviously the raw cuts. Don’t get me wrong, the songs sounded great already. But they lacked that studio polish; the dynamic massaging that turns a good song into a great recording. My fellow musicians will understand what I mean. Anyway, I always wondered what the songs would have sounded like if the project would have been allowed to come to fruition.

I need wait no longer! November 23rd, and I get some new Mr Mister stuff!

PS. Richard Page also has a new solo album out, and he toured with Ringo’s All-Star band earlier this year. Here’s some video.

Things You Really Shouldn’t Have To Tell Your Dog…

“Elsa….. Don’t Eat Your House!!!!”

I’m in the process of building a dog house for Les Doggies. It’s not done quite yet, but I moved it into the back yard today as it would have been much harder to get back there when it’s complete.

So, we’re just getting done with dinner, and I keep hearing this beaver-like gnawing sound. I look outside, and wouldn’t you know, Elsa is giving it a go at eating her way through the floor of the still incomplete dog house.

OK. I didn’t realize I was building a giant shew toy.
