Yep! After 20 years of being shelved, Richard Page and the other Mr’s have managed to talk the record company into surrendering the last recorded Mr. Mister album called “Pull“, and this 20 year old collection of songs is going to be released this month!

For those who are not in the loop, Pull was to be the fourth release by the band. Before they started recording, around 1990, super-guitarist Steve Ferris left the band. Various studio guitarists, including Buzz Feiten and personal fave Trevor Rabin, were brought in to fill the tremendous gap. Just as the recording phase was being completed, the stupid record company dropped the band, and the three original members decided to call it a day.

A little background. I am a huge Mr Mister fan. Go On, was the last album released. In late 1989, I remember listening to 91X while driving down the I-5 in San Diego, and hearing that Ferris had left the band, and that Feiten was going to be brought in to replace him. That was the last thing I heard until getting the news that the band was no more. I was pretty bummed. Unlike my sister Mary Beth, and Cliffie, my fellow Mr Mister worshiping RareForm guitarist, I would never see them live. Still,Go On was terrific, and I figured that was a good album to be their swan song.

Sometime in 2008, while surfing the web looking for something to blog about…. or more likely just waisting time, by happenstance I came across a web site that mentioned some bootleg recordings of the unreleased Mr Mister material floating around the web. Naturally I hunkered down and through exhaustive searching, i.e. typing in the words “Mr Mister” into the Google, I found that someone had leaked the unreleased album into one of the bit-torrent sites.

I found the recordings. I was overjoyed. There are some real stand-outs in this collection of songs, notably “Quietly, Silently” and “Let The River Run”. They are great songs. Page’s bass playing is steady, and his VOX are silky smooth as ever. Also, more than the previous records, this album belongs to drummer Pat Mastelotto. He absolutely shines! On the downside, Steve Farris extraordinary guitar work is missed. There are bit on songs where you ponder, “man, I wonder what strange / wonderful thing Farris would have pulled there”. Oh well, he’s not there. What can you do. Also, there were a couple of tracks missing, and the tracks that were there were obviously the raw cuts. Don’t get me wrong, the songs sounded great already. But they lacked that studio polish; the dynamic massaging that turns a good song into a great recording. My fellow musicians will understand what I mean. Anyway, I always wondered what the songs would have sounded like if the project would have been allowed to come to fruition.

I need wait no longer! November 23rd, and I get some new Mr Mister stuff!

PS. Richard Page also has a new solo album out, and he toured with Ringo’s All-Star band earlier this year. Here’s some video.

Very cool. For me, it isn’t the same without Farris on the guitar. I have heard some of the tracks, and it they just don’t sound right without his guitar work. Sounds more like a rRichard Page album to me. Fienten’s guitar work is very uninspiring.
