It&#8217;s called a <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Beech_blight_aphid\">beech blight aphid<\/a>. Notice this is not a mantis. A mantis, by Sonicfrog Blog tradition, means I am going to San Diego. Tomorrow I&#8217;m going to the California central coast, a small town near Santa Cruz called <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Aptos,_California\">Aptos<\/a>. It&#8217;s on the beach The bug has noting to do with the beach, since it&#8217;s a &#8220;beech&#8221; blight aphid, and not a &#8220;beach&#8221; blight aphid. It feeds off the sap of beech trees, and, unless there are beech trees on the beach, I probably won&#8217;t see any of these unusual looking little suckers. While composing this post, I was looking for a butterfly or some other bug you might see at the coast, but stumbled on these little guys and decided to use them instead. &#8220;Beech&#8221; is close to &#8220;Beach&#8221;, so I ran with it.<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, hope you all have a good Memorial Day week-end. Hope it doesn&#8217;t suck&#8230;.   get it? Aphids. Suck!!!!<\/p>\n<p>PS. The Sonic-Mate was complaining that my last few posts were very Satanic. Hope this post breaks that trend. Of coarse if you&#8217;re scared of bugs&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p>PPS. Ooh! Just found out Apos was the epicenter of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.olympus.net\/personal\/gofamily\/quake\/famous\/prieta.html\">Loma Prieta earthquake<\/a> in 1989. I LOVE seismology, and I&#8217;m all a quiver at the oportunity to check out the area. I may just straddle the San Andreas Fault for the second time in my life, the first was in <a href=\"http:\/\/earthquake.usgs.gov\/research\/parkfield\/index.php\">Parkfield<\/a> in 2004&#8217;ish.<\/p>\n<p>PPPS.
