This is what I wrote back in January. of last year.

Obama’s Stimulus Package = The Patriot Act of 2009? – UPDATE

So Obama wants Congress to pass the stimulus bill of $825 Billion plus by mid February. That’s about two weeks away. It sounds like a long time, but we’re talking about a heck of a lot of money. Do any of the liberals championing this remember the way the last rushed stimulus package turned out? They still don’t know where much of the money went. Does the first stimulus package have oversight yet?. Remember the CBO was worried about the difficulty of hiring people who can understand the intensely complicated financial work involved (not one of the millionaires on Capital Hill knows a capable accountant?). Is this bill any less complicated? Do any of the liberals championing this package of pork remember the outrage of their liberal constituents and the way they had to run for cover after it was revealed they passed the Patriot Act without reading it? Because, they said, they were not given enough time to do so??? Of course, since they were voted back into office, maybe reading bills and contemplating the long term, or even short term consequences just doesn’t matter anymore.

Note that the criticism is concerned with the lack of insight, not the stimulus itself. This is what I wrote concerning the stimulus a year later.

He’s talking about the fact that the stimulus has done little to bolster the economy or turn back the tide of unemployment. The majority of the stimulus was a collection of political bribes and kick-backs desired by the Pelosi / Reid apparatchiks, pent up by the Republican firewall for the last eight years, and did nothing to improve infrastructure or economic growth. The 1/3?rd of the stimulus that did go to the right places was not nearly enough to do much of anything. Though I don’t disagree with the auto and bank bailouts (they stink, but I think they were the right thing to do) it remains to be seen whether the auto bailouts will result in the survival of GM (probably) or Chrysler (doubtful), and the bank bail-outs are a continuation of policies set forth by the hated Bush administration. The thing that hurt Obama and the congress most is the almost universal predictions by economists that the current recovery will be a jobless one. Obama has indeed not only not absorbed this, but instead of pursuing policy that might change this prospect, he and congress are pursuing policies such as the botched Health Care Deformed, which will only increase the bureaucratic paperwork needed to operate a health care facility and not much else, and cap-and-trade, which will along with HCD increase the costs of everything through tax increases….

“The 1/3?rd of the stimulus that did go to the right places was not nearly enough to do much of anything. Note that I defend the President against stupid useless comments in that post.

What have written about bail-outs? Here is the meta search for that. Here is what I wrote on Feb 16, 2009:

September 18th is both my Mom’s and Little Brother’s birthday. On Sept. 18th of last year, it is also the day the world financial system nearly crashed.

For the first time since they past the $700 Billion TARP relief package, someone actually explains why everyone was in such a panic. They had good reason to be. We came this close to a total, worldwide collapse of the financial system. During this time period Lehman Brother’s had gone under, B of A purchase an ailing Meryl Lynch, and insurance giant AIG revealed they were in the midsts of a liquidity crisis. That was what we saw and heard in the news. There was an aspect to this that was kept quiet… on September 18th, around 11AM, the feds realized there was a run on the money market funds, at a rate of $270 billion in a matter of two hours. Without immediate action, it was estimated that the loses would have been around $5.5 Trillion, which would have bankrupted the United States and world financial system. They halted trading, issued a $250 federal guarantee on money market accounts, which stopped the financial bleeding.

A lot of people are ticked because the money that was supposed to be used to by the toxic loans (and they aren’t all mortgage btw) are instead now being used to prop up the banks. Turns out there is a good reason. The toxic assets, as it turns out are much much more toxic than originally estimated. To get them off the books would have cost over FIVE TRILLION DOLLARS. Realizing there was no way in hell to that the United States could raise that kind of capital, Paulson and Co. decided to simply prop up the banks instead. Of course, they didn’t think that the banks would turn around and waste some of that money, but they should have added more restrictions on the bail-outs.

Again, notice that the criticism is not about the bail-out itself, but about the way it was spent, and the complete lack of oversight.

What about the things I wrote on Facebook? Or other sites I sometimes leave comments on, such as The Volokh Conspiracy or Gay Patriot or Ann Althouse or The Debate Link.? I dare you to take the time to search out anything that I wrote concerning the stimulus or the bail-outs that doesn’t end with something along these lines – ” I don’t like the bail-out, but I see the necessity of them.

Though you claim to read my blog, obviously you don’t. Your claim that I’m a hypocrite, based on my blog-posts, is non-existent. As to your opinion that my writings are incoherent, incomprehensible, and hypocritical, I have two suggestions – Either don’t claim to read my blog when it can be clearly demonstrated that you don’t, or, if you do actually read my blog… learn to read for comprehension.

PS. One more thing. I also suggest you get your head out of your partisan ass and stop thinking you know how other people think about things just because they don’t share the same political opinions as you. What made your phone call especially disappointing was that I had made a conscious effort to not think about politics for a few days. I didn’t listen to any talk radio, right or left, during the entire six hour drive from Fresno to San Diego. I was relaxed and happy, spending time on Fiesta Island, playing guitar, bass and mandolin. I was just making music, learning more songs, and enjoying myself. When my phone indicated that you were calling, I was hoping the call would be an invite to get together and maybe do dinner or something. Instead, my vacation away from work and the daily grind of life was nearly ruined by your smug self righteous attitude and the false accusation of my being a hypocrite. And, don’t ever, EVER scold someone for using the write-in space on the ballot as a means of issuing a protest vote! How DARE YOU lecture anybody on how they should or shouldn’t vote. If I think both Presidential candidates suck, as I did the last time around, I’ll again use the write-in option as a means of protest. It’s called free speech. Who knows, maybe instead of writing in Paris Hilton as i did the last time, maybe I’ll write in someone even less qualified…..

I have a question; Why is it that I can have a cordial conversation with so many of my friends who are politically polar opposite, say John K, a far right wing guy, and “Taylor-Martin” band-mate Jim R, a proud socialist (his terminology, not mine) where we agree to dissagree the right and left, yet there is no animosity after? It’s because, though our political philosophies may be radically different (hell, John and Jim are able to talk about politics without hurling accusations at each other, and they are as different ass they come), we respect our differing points of view. You don’t. You hold anyone who doesn’t agree with your Rolling Stone imprinted view of the world with nothing but contempt. And it’s sad, because you only come off as a liberal version of Sean Hannity or Michale Savage, two people who are so partisan that they are completely closed minded and hostile to anything that doesn’t fit their cemented world view. Anyway, please don’t call me unless you think you can have a conversation that doesn’t include anything that includes politics or your erroneous assumptions of what the world is like outside your partisan bubble.
