This is one of the arguments used to sway voters in California to vote yes on Proposition 8, the measure that will Constitutionally bar gays and lesbians from using the term &#8220;Married&#8221; to describe their legal union. It sounds like a good argument, but it is flawed. This <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2008\/03\/17\/nyregion\/17samesex.html?_r=1&#038;ref=nyregion&#038;oref=login\">exposes the flaws<\/a> in the two tiered concept of the Civil Union or Domestic Partnership versus actual marriage. Here is an example <a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/news\/opinion\/la-oe-goldberg9aug09,0,1609793.story?coll=la-opinion-center\">of the inequalities inherent<\/a> in California&#8217;s Domestic Partnership law hurting a heterosexual:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Consider the ruling two weeks ago ordering an Orange County man to continue paying alimony to his ex-wife, even though she is now in a registered domestic partnership with another woman. This session, the Legislature is considering three bills to resolve other gaps, ambiguities and inequities &#8212; and that&#8217;s not unusual. We have needed multiple pieces of legal patchwork every year since 2001, when domestic partnerships went into effect.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>There are many examples of how this &#8220;separate but equal&#8221; policy simply fails to ensure equality.
