Kevin Kirby, 1969 – 2011. RIP.
Kevin was a close friend of mine who died this last week-end. This is why I haven’t blogged since Christmas. Just haven’t been in the mood to write.
Kevin had a terrific sense of humor, and was one of the smartest people I know. He was a true geek in every sense of the word, played D & D and Magic the Gathering and would often pull a Star Trek or Star Wars reference out of his crack at the drop of a hat! He was a couple years younger than I which makes his death somehow suck even more. My friends, especially the younger ones, shouldn’t be leaving this world yet.
Since Kevin loved to laugh, I’ll post a picture he featured on his FaceBook page and end with the last joke I remember him telling. It’s what he would have liked I think.

PS. Kevin liked his beer, and paid the price for it. He died of an esophageal hemorrhage, which is a byproduct of cirrhosis of the liver, a condition he was suffering from. So… My friends who are fond of the bottle, PLEASE take note. I don’t mean to lecture, and I know Kevin would verbally slap me for bringing this up at this time. That said, I lost a great friend, and feel that if nothing else, his untimely death can be a lesson for others.

Kevin was a great guy. He will be missed by his friends greatly.

I moved to Fresno when I was in the 4th grade. It’s not easy making new friends when you’re the new kid, but I found a kindred spirit in Kevin. Until 6th grade, he was my closest friend. We spent most afternoons together, often playing on our Atari 2600s or at the 7/11 playing arcade games. We didn’t agree on everything. Kevin was into the X-men and Marvel comics and I was a Batman/DC guy, but we were both geeks together (long before that was the cool thing to be).
We still hung out some in middle school, but in high school I went to Computech magnet school across town and Kevin went to Bullard and I don’t remember seeing him since then.
I’ve thought about Kevin in the past. Back in 2000, I saw the X-Men film and regretted that I hadn’t start reading it all those years earlier…
Today, I was listening to Kevin Smith’s new “Fat Man on Batman” podcast interview with Mark Hamill. Mark and Kevin were talking about their childhoods and reading comics with friends when they were kids (or, for Smith, playing with Star Wars toys) and I immediately started thinking of Kevin Kirby again. I’ve googled him before with little luck, but today I found this news.
I’m truly saddened and I’m sorry I’ll never get another chance to reconnect with one of my oldest friends.

Oh hell… I’m so sorry no was able to tell you sooner. This Chrismas will be very hard for his Mom, and us too.
John Kirby is now in Missouri living with his older bro. If you know Eric Dvorak, a mutual friend, he lives in Los Angeles. He’s coming up to visit this week-end. If you know him, I’ll pass on a quick “Hi” for you. If you know Greg Hutchings, I pass along a “hi” for him also.
