Dale Carpenter’s response is priceless! Note that he includes the the transcript of the full quote. Here is Qoute 1 in it’s full form:

My opponent did. And that’s not the example that we should be showing our children, and certainly not in our schools.

And don’t misquote me as wanting to hurt homosexual people in any way. That would be a dastardly lie. My approach is ‘live and let live.’ I just think my children and your children would be much better off and much more successful getting married and raising a family. And I don’t want them to be brainwashed into thinking that homosexuality is an equally valid and successful option – it isn’t.

Once again, homosexuals = predators and perverts out to convert children to homosexuality! Vile! The full context of the quote makes his comments much worse than they came of on my first reading. Dale responds:

I have some news for Mr. Paladino. Being gay is not an “equally valid and successful option” for a heterosexual child. But for a gay kid, being gay is the option. Whether it is “successful” depends a lot on the love and support shown to that child as she grows up. It depends on whether the people whose words she hears in public media, and yes in schools, tell her that nobody could possibly feel the way she does unless she had been “brainwashed.” A heartbreaking number of gay youths conclude, at a rate several times that of their peers, that everyone would be better off without them.

Lots of gay and straight people would be “more successful getting married and raising a family.” I know Mr. Paladino opposes same-sex marriage, since he has pledged to veto any SSM bill that passes the state legislature. So when Mr. Paladino says that children would be better off getting married and raising a family, is he saying that gay people should marry opposite-sex spouses and bring kids into those marriages?

Uhm… No! He’s saying “don’t be gay” you silly goose! Dale continues:

Of course he is not suggesting such a thoughtless thing. Instead, his message was thoughtless in a different way: I doubt he gives any thought at all to what kind of future gay kids will have. They do not register with him, except perhaps as incipient agents of destruction. It is past time to stop pandering to Mr. Paladino by pretending that he represents any deep moral tradition, rather than a deeply immoral impulse to exploit hoary and discredited fears of people he knows and cares nothing about.

I don’t like Andrew Cuomo, but if I still lived in New York, he’d now get my vote.

This isn’t politics… It’s personal: Carl Paladino, You’re Not Helping.

And here I thought that politics on the west coast was dysfunctional. Carl Paladino, the Republican gubernatorial candidate for New York is on record as saying this:

“My feelings on homosexuality are unequivocal; I have absolutely no problem with it whatsoever. My only reservation is marriage,”.

Sounds great…. except he also is on records expressing these thoughts:

Quote 1.

Sounds like he has a reservation about gay pride parades. OK. pride parades are pretty racy; I’m not a fan of them either. They serve to reinforce the typical gay stereotype. If only he would have stopped there.

Sounds like he has reservations about gays because being gay is not natural and is not what God wanted; they’re dysfunctional.

Quote 3.

“I just think my children and your children would be much better off and much more successful getting married and raising a family, and I don’t want them brainwashed into thinking that homosexuality is an equally valid and successful option — it isn’t.”

Being gay is not in societies best interest. Gays, you shouldn’t be happy. You’re not normal. You are not equal or valid to society….

Dude! How on Earth does that jive with “My feelings on homosexuality are unequivocal; I have absolutely no problem with it whatsoever. My only reservation is marriage…”. You’ve obviously got a problem with it. Like many social conservative types, you almost seem obsessed by it.

In light of the recent news coverage of gay teen suicides, you would think that the candidate would be more careful with his words.

He was?

Yep. He apparently scratched this line out of his speech:

“There is nothing to be proud of in being a dysfunctional homosexual.”

Good for you. That is a really nasty line. Like the recent Jerry Brown “whore” dust-up, I don’t think it’s quite fair to make an issue of things that were uttered in confidence, behind closed doors. Political campaigns are nasty affairs, and I’m sure that the Whitman campaign has referred to Brown in some, lets just say, unflattering terms. If “whore is the worst thing anyone in the Brown camp has said about Whitman, she’s getting off lucky. This quote, crossed out by Paladino himself, Yet, when you put quotes 1, 2, and 3 together, they say the exact same thing – There is nothing to be proud of in being a homosexual, which is dysfunctional according to your world view.

Paladino says

“Don’t misquote me as wanting to hurt homosexual people in any way. That would be a dastardly lie.”

Sir, we don’t have to misquote you for that. You’re so locked in to your own proper “normal” way of life, so isolated by your beliefs, that you don’t even see how your comments might affect a gay teen struggling to survive in this world. Trust me, as someone who had to deal with the negativity associated with being gay when I was growing up, someone who basically shut down his emotions to buffer against the hostility thrown at the concept of being gay, your words do hurt, sometimes greatly. They do have an impact and add to the damage of our battered self image.

Simply stated… You’re not helping!

NOTE: Yet another social conservative Tea Party candidate. Someone again please try to convince me that the Tea Party is only concerned about fiscal issues.
