Another Insect…
… another road trip!
Believe it or not, this is an insect, or, rather, insects. It’s called a beech blight aphid. Notice this is not a mantis. A mantis, by Sonicfrog Blog tradition, means I am going to San Diego. Tomorrow I’m going to the California central coast, a small town near Santa Cruz called Aptos. It’s on the beach The bug has noting to do with the beach, since it’s a “beech” blight aphid, and not a “beach” blight aphid. It feeds off the sap of beech trees, and, unless there are beech trees on the beach, I probably won’t see any of these unusual looking little suckers. While composing this post, I was looking for a butterfly or some other bug you might see at the coast, but stumbled on these little guys and decided to use them instead. “Beech” is close to “Beach”, so I ran with it.
Anyway, hope you all have a good Memorial Day week-end. Hope it doesn’t suck…. get it? Aphids. Suck!!!!
PS. The Sonic-Mate was complaining that my last few posts were very Satanic. Hope this post breaks that trend. Of coarse if you’re scared of bugs….
PPS. Ooh! Just found out Apos was the epicenter of the Loma Prieta earthquake in 1989. I LOVE seismology, and I’m all a quiver at the oportunity to check out the area. I may just straddle the San Andreas Fault for the second time in my life, the first was in Parkfield in 2004’ish.
PPPS. New Blogtopus link, long overdue – USGS, Science for a Changing World.
